Seventeen - Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens Seventeen February 2008

A trusted voice for young women since 1944, Seventeen magazine continues to shape conversations around fashion, beauty, and modern life—covering everything from health and relationships to careers, culture, and entertainment.

This month’s cover star, Vanessa Hudgens of High School Musical, opens up with honesty and maturity about a deeply personal chapter in her life. Known to many as America’s sweetheart, Hudgens reveals a more nuanced side—opinionated, confident, and intentionally private. Reflecting on past challenges, she shares, “It was very traumatic, and I am extremely upset it happened,” while expressing hope that her fans can learn from her experience and make thoughtful choices of their own.

Born in Salinas, California, to Gina and Greg Hudgens, Vanessa’s multicultural heritage—Irish, Native American, Filipina, Spanish, and Chinese—has long been part of her identity. After being homeschooled following her time at Orange County High School of the Arts, she began performing at just eight years old, eventually rising to global fame with High School Musical. She also launched her debut album, V, in 2006.

On the cover, Hudgens adds a personal touch with Alex Woo’s Little Letter “V” in diamonds—an elegant reflection of individuality and self-expression. And in a charming note of connection, her co-star Ashley Tisdale is also a fan of Alex Woo, having chosen her own piece as a symbol of good luck.
