Instyle – What’s Right Now! Why Freida Pinto Wears a Chimpanzee Necklace

Freida Pinto knows how to work “statement” jewelry! The actress stopped by Nylon’s 13th anniversary party this week, where she accessorized her Prada shift with a delicate gold chimpanzee pendant by Alex Woo, the sales of which benefit the Jane Goodall Institute. “It’s the kind of necklace that doesn’t need to be worn with anything special,” Pinto said of the piece, which Woo designed in honor of Disney’s Chimpanzee movie, out April 20th. “When you’re wearing something to support a good cause, the rest doesn’t matter. Prada just helps it.” Shop the necklace in eco-friendly recycled sterling silver and 14-karat gold.

Nylon – Turn on the charm

Nylon July 2009

With her Little Icon collection, designer Alex Woo injects fun into fine jewelry by creating charms that are at once elegant ad playful.  But Woo is quite serious about her mini masterpieces: “Each one is designed to stand alone like a piece of artwork,” says Woo, who has a background in sculpture, and designs and crafts each trinket in her New York City studio.

Music lovers may dig the tiny musical notes, but there are quirky combos for everyone: Try coupling a silver spade with a 14-karat-gold horseshoe for a little luck, or sport your initials in diamond-encrusted letters for a flashier look.  The pendants can be fancy but also, as Woo insists, “classic enough to wear everyday.” – Rebecca Strauss

Nylon – Rubber Duckie, You’re the One

Nylon - April 2009As a vibrant and proactive voice for today’s hip, intelligent, young women seeking fresh perspectives on fashion, beauty and music, NYLON is unique. Trendy and edgy they push a visual style and thinking gal’s guide to today’s issues that the other fashion mags may skip over. As an example, on their online blog, they highlighted Alex Woo’s Little Ducky from her Little Baby collection and relate it to the famous vintage Sesame Street song from Ernie (sung by Jim Henson) and written by Jeff Moss.

Rubber Duckie, You’re The One
Jewelry designer Alex Woo says this duck pendant is for Easter.

But as someone who has never celebrated Easter, I respectfully disagree.

This duck pendant is for the Ernie to your Bert, the Elmo to your Grouch, the Big Bird to your Snufalupagus.

It’s also waterproof, so you can wear it in the bathtub.
